Cultural Materiality

The manuscript, in its wide variety of forms and physical carriers, is the primary source material for studying the premodern world. This lecture series fosters a cross-cultural comparative perspective by inviting experts on three manuscript traditions (Chinese, Arabic and Hebrew) to address key questions in the field of manuscript studies. The main focus is on the manuscript as a physical object, the interaction and dialogue of its materiality with the written text, the circumstances of its production and transmission down through the ages, and on its function and use at different times and places in the history of oral and written communication.

In meiner Visualisierung habe ich auf ein Umfeld aus (Blüten-) Blättern zurückgegriffen. Die Magnolie steht sinnbildlich für Tradition, da der Magnolienbaum erdgeschichtlich sehr alt ist. Seine Blütenform gab es bereits vor rund 100 Millionen Jahren. In der Masse der Blätter sind das Original und seine Kopie nur im direkten Nebeneinander zu unterscheiden und einzuordnen. In meiner Vorstellung büsst eine Kopie immer an Authentizität und damit Wert ein. Daher ist die Kopie hier auch fahler abgebildet.
